Why getting life insurance with Crohn's or colitis feels hard

You've probably been here before. A long form, some very personal questions, and then a no, or a price that ignored years of you managing your condition well.

Most insurance systems weren't built for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). When the computer sees Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, it often stops reading. It doesn't ask when your last flare was, whether your treatment is working, or how long you've been in remission.

There's something else many people worry about, and rightly so. Being declined leaves a footprint. Other insurers can see it, and it makes future applications harder. So applying to the wrong insurer first isn't just disappointing, it can genuinely set you back.

That's why talking to a specialist first matters. We can make discreet enquiries with insurers before anything formal goes on your record, so you only apply where the answer looks right.

The protection we can help with

Life insurance with Crohn's or colitis

A tax-free lump sum for your family if you die during the policy term. For many people with well-controlled Crohn's or colitis, this is more achievable and more affordable than they expect.

    Income protection

A monthly income if illness or injury stops you working. We'll be completely straight with you on this one: policies for people with Crohn's or colitis often include a condition-related exclusion, which means they may not pay out for time off caused by your IBD itself. Some insurers offer narrower terms than others, and we'll always explain exactly what a policy does and doesn't cover before you apply.

    Critical illness cover

A lump sum if you're diagnosed with a serious illness covered by the policy. Availability and terms depend on your history. We'll tell you honestly what's realistic.

Having Crohn's or colitis is not the whole answer

Two people with the same diagnosis can get very different decisions, because the diagnosis is only the start of the question. What insurers really want to understand is your version of the condition. How long you've been diagnosed. When your last flare was. What treatment you're on and how stable it is. Whether you've had surgery, and how you've recovered.

Different insurers weigh those things differently. One insurer's no is not every insurer's no. Our job is knowing the difference before you apply anywhere.

What insurers look at with Crohn's and colitis

Insurers don't all treat these conditions the same way, which is exactly why the choice of insurer matters. The things that genuinely influence an application:

    • Which condition you have. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are assessed differently. Neither is a barrier in itself.
    • When your last flare was. Time in remission is your strongest asset. The longer things have been settled, the stronger your position.
    • Your treatment. Stable maintenance treatment reads well. Biologic treatment tells insurers your condition is significant but also that it's being actively and effectively managed. Recent steroid courses suggest recent activity, so timing can matter.
    • Surgery. Insurers ask what was done, when, and how you've recovered. Surgery that resolved the problem can actually strengthen an application, including for people living well with a stoma.
    • Hospital admissions. Recent ones affect terms; older ones matter much less.
    • Complications. Things like fistulas, abscesses or related conditions will prompt more questions, though not automatically a no.
    • Smoking. It matters for everyone, but insurers know it particularly affects Crohn's, so being a non-smoker helps more than usual here.

None of these decide the outcome alone. The picture is what counts, and presenting the picture properly is what we do.

Meet the family behind Crohn's and Colitis Life

We're Andy, Sam and Luke, the Stevens family, born and raised in Kent. We've spent years helping people with medical conditions get life insurance that treats them fairly, after hearing too many stories of people being overcharged or turned away by insurers who didn't understand them.

This brand is personal for us. Andy has lived with a lifelong bowel condition himself, so when you talk to us about the realities of your condition, you're talking to people who genuinely get it. Nothing you tell us will shock us, and nothing about your condition makes you a nuisance for asking.

You'll always speak to a named UK-based adviser, never a call centre.

    Our family, looking after yours.
